How To Properly And Easily Maintain Your Pool

After your pool has been completed, you have to decide on the best way to maintain it so that stays clean, safe, and fun for everyone to enjoy. The easiest way to maintain your pool is to hire a reliable pool maintenance professional to do most of the maintaining for you. Ask your friends, neighbors, and family who own pools for their recommendations and remember that you’re looking for someone who is trustworthy, thorough, and responsible. After shopping around and considering your options, you’ll be able to decide which service will best meet your needs.

If you prefer to maintain your pool yourself or if you want to be sure that the pool maintenance professional you’ve hired properly cares for your pool, you will need to adhere to a maintenance schedule. The following is a good guide.

The Essential Pool Maintenance Guide

WEEKLY MAINTENANCE:

Brush* the entire surface of the pool, including any tiled areas.

Manually vacuum* or brush any dirt and debris, which has not already been removed by your cleaning system, toward the main drains.

Net any debris off the surface of the pool water.

Clean out the skimmer and pump baskets.

Check the filter pressure to determine if backwashing or cartridge cleaning is necessary.

Test the levels of chlorine, pH and alkalinity.

If the pool has a chlorinator, check the level of chlorine and add as needed.

FILTER MAINTAINENCE:

Cartridge Filters: When the pressure gauge increases 10 psi, tear down the filter by removing the cartridge element. Clean thoroughly.

D.E. Filters: Every 6 months, or whenever pressure gauge reads "dirty," tear down the filter by removing the grids. Clean thoroughly.

BEYOND WEEKLY MAINTAINENCE:

Every month, the ceramic tile and grout should be cleaned using a tile cleaning solution.

Every month, if the pool has a salt chlorinator, check the salt content level.

Every month, the mastic should be inspected for cracks and separation. Repair or replace any damaged mastic.

Every 12 months, have a complete pool water analysis done by a professional pool company.

When necessary, "super chlorinate" or "shock" the pool water after heavy usage or a heavy rainstorm.

* Brushing Your Pool
Brushing in an important part of the initial "new pool" cleaning process but, even after your pool is clean (and even if you own an automatic cleaning system), it is important to occasionally brush your pool to remove the dirt that will adhere to the wall and floor. When brushing your pool, start at the top of the walls on the tile line and work your way down to the bottom of your pool or spa. Please be careful while brushing because allowing plastic edges of the brush to scrape the surface may cause marking of the plaster. Using steady, firm strokes, always brush the dirt toward the recirculating drain, overlapping your brush strokes.

* Using Your Vacuum Cleaner
Many pools may not require a vacuum cleaner when an automatic cleaning system is installed, however, there are always those special times when heavy use of the pool, wind storms or children throwing dirt or debris into the pool may overtax the cleaning system. The vacuum works as part of the filter system and is attached through the skimmer. The pool water, along with dirt and leaves, are drawn through the vacuum and flow through the normal filter system. Leaves, and other large objects, are caught in the strainer basket and small particles are removed in the filter.

Case Study

Why Using A Small Contractor Isn’t Always Cheaper.

In 2004, Dave Lindahl and his family had a big problem. And the enormous unfinished hole in their small San Clemente backyard with an ocean view seemed to tell the whole story. After thinking about putting in a pool and Jacuzzi for more than 10 years, the Lindahl’s finally decided to go for it. After all, the whole family loves to surf. And Dave always loved the idea of having a great place to hang out with the kids after surfing.

So without doing much research, Dave decided to use a small local contractor who had built his sister’s pool. “My sister had used a small contractor who did pools. So we contacted him, had him do the design and we went with it. Everything went great at first. We dug the hole, got the permits, started putting in the rebar, everything.”

Then things went south. The small contractor that Dave had chosen began to have some personal problems and construction came to an abrupt halt. Then the record rainfall of 2004 started wreaking havoc on his backyard and actually caved in an entire side of the pool’s hole. Dave tried to reach his contractor for weeks but his phone calls went unanswered.

Dave knew he needed help, but he was worried that no one would want to touch a messy, half-finished project. That’s why he was shocked by California Pools’ response. He had heard great things about California Pools and knew that they had been in business for more than 50 years, but there was no way he could have expected the incredible service or the immediate results that he got.

Dave recalls, “The owner of California Pools heard about our problem and he felt bad for us, so he had the guys down here take care of it.” In less than four months, the unfinished pool with the missing contractor had gone from a complete disaster to completely finished. And best of all, it looked exactly like he had hoped it would. “We wanted the backyard to look like a meadow in the mountains,” he said. “At night, with the lights and the pine trees, you’d swear you were in the mountains.”

So what’s the lesson? Always do your homework before you choose a pool builder. The reason that so many small contractors can build a pool for a few thousand less is because they have virtually no overhead. But that means they could be working out of their garage…or they could go out of business at any time. And when they’re gone, so is your warranty.

As you already know, choosing a pool contractor is a big deal. And because California Pools has built more than 60,000 pools over the last 57 years, you don’t have to worry if we’ll be around tomorrow to complete your pool or to back up our guarantee.

Dave learned that you get what you pay for. He concluded, “Some people seem to think that you pay a little more if you go with a larger contractor. But if you go with a small guy who doesn’t get the job done the way you wanted, you might end up paying more anyway.”

Features And Options

Our swimming pool designs and features have come a long way since we built our first pool in 1952! Today, California Pools offers a wide array of unique and exciting features for your pool. Select from the drop-down list below to learn more about some of these options!

Infinity Edge Pools
California Pools is proud to have pioneered one of today’s most popular and visually stunning pool features – the “infinity edge”. On infinity edge pools, one side of the pool has a “negative edge”, meaning that it is even with the water level in the pool. Water spills over this edge into a catch basin below, where it is then pumped back into the pool. And the effect is breathtaking as your pool seems to “float” above the landscaping and view of the yard.

Waterfalls, Fountains & Other Water Features
Our attention to detail is one of the things that sets us apart from other pool builders. We know that your swimming pool should be more than just functional – it should add interest and beauty to your backyard. Incorporating a water feature, such as a waterfall or fountain, into your pool’s design can help accomplish this.

Water features come in many different styles. It’s common to see a raised spa that pours over some type of spillway into the pool below. You might also consider a bubbling fountain rising from a step or shallow pool, water spouts arching water across the pool’s surface, or a dramatic waterfall constructed of rock and surrounded by lush landscaping elements. Any of these unique water features will help transform your swimming pool into an elegant backyard resort.

Rock Features
The use of natural and/or manmade rock can have a dramatic effect on your swimming pool design. From simple pebble work in a wall or deck to dramatic boulders flanking a pool or defining a waterfall, the use of rocks helps to create the kind of serene and breathtaking atmosphere you’d find in nature. Possibilities for incorporating rock into your swimming pool design are endless.

Beach Entries and Baja Steps
Historically, swimming pool entries were basically all the same: three or four small steps leading down into the “shallow end” of the pool. But today, many homeowners are enjoying a more “natural” design, such as a “beach entry.” Much like a beach that gradually descends into the ocean waves, a beach entry pool features a deck that gently slopes beneath the surface of the water and becomes increasingly deep as you move forward.

Some pool owners are also incorporating a “baja step” into their pool. This is simply a large rounded step, generally only a few inches to a foot or so deep, that allows swimmers and loungers alike to dabble in the water without becoming entirely immersed.

Your Experience

We Make It Easy!
From your initial consultation, to design, construction, and project management, California Pools is completely committed to making your pool building experience an easy one. One of the ways we do this is by assigning you a dedicated project manager who is always available to answer your questions. Most pools take between 2-3 months to build. But you’ll receive a detailed project schedule that will give you a better idea of how long your custom pool should take to complete, and what you can expect throughout the building process. Your project manager will always be there to make sure you are informed and completely satisfied.

Here’s What You Can Expect
While every custom built pool is different, the design and building process generally remains the same. Here’s what you can expect after you contact California Pools.

1. One of our expert designers will visit you at your home.
We’ll gather information about what you want to accomplish. What do you want the space to look like? How will the pool be used? Then we’ll measure the yard, consider the location for sunlight and usability, and make sure that you understand all of the available options. In this initial consultation, we listen carefully so that we can seamlessly incorporate your dreams and your vision into an elegant and functional backyard oasis.

2. Within two weeks, your custom design will be completed and ready for review.
Using blue prints and an advanced 3D modeling design software, you’ll actually be able to see what your new pool will look like in amazing detail. You’ll also be able to discuss and decide on further options, details, and features.

3. Once you decide to move forward, we can immediately begin to schedule the building phase of your new pool.
As we help you through the permitting process, our representatives will schedule a “pre-construction meeting” with you so that you know exactly what to expect over the next few months. We can do this meeting in your house or our office….. wherever is most convenient and comfortable for you.

4. We will begin to engineer your custom pool with meticulous detail.
We will start by grading and excavating, or digging out the site. We’ll also perform any necessary demolition during this phase. After the site has been excavated, we will install the reinforncing steel, or rebar. Then all of the plumbing and electrical work will be completed before the pool goes through an initial inspection.

5. Your pool will be sprayed with a concrete-like substance known as gunite.
This usually takes between one and two weeks to cure, or dry. After the gunite has cured, we will install the coping and tile.

6. We will complete all of the masonry work.
If you have chosen to include features like custom walls, rock features, waterfalls, a bar-b-que or a fireplace, they will be built or installed during this phase of construction.

7. The deck of your pool will be installed.
It usually takes two weeks to prepare the deck and one week to install the decking. Then your pool will go through another inspection. Any options such as gates, fences, or alarms will also be installed here.

8. Finally, your pool will be plastered.
This is one of the last phases of construction. It will usually only take one day to plaster your pool.

9. Fill your new pool with water!
When the plaster phase is complete, your pool will finally be ready to be filled with water. Now it’s time to call your friends and family so you can have a pool party to celebrate!

1. How do I select the right pool builder?
Make sure to interview your prospective builder very carefully. Here are a few things to consider.

What is the company’s reputation in the community?

Do you know a friend or neighbor who has used the same company with good results? If not, can the company provide you with dozens of reliable references or customer report cards?

How does the company treat you as a potential customer?

How long has the company been in business, and how long have they been building in your area?

How many pools have they built?

Will the company provide you with a clear written estimate so that you’re not confused about what work will be done?

Will they finish the project on time?

Is the company in good standing with your local Building Department, the State Department of Consumer Affairs and/or Contractor’s Board?

Will the company add hidden charges after the construction process has begun?

Is the company financially stable so that there is no risk that you’ll be left with an unfinished pool if they go out of business?

Will the company be careful to remove or take care of landscaping and other outdoor structures?

Will they keep your property clean and safe throughout the construction process?

Aside from winning hundreds of awards for beautiful and innovative custom pools, California Pools is also well known within the industry for offering unparalleled customer service. From helping you understand all of the design options, to clearly communicating what you can expect during the construction process, we make sure that you are well informed during each phase of the project. And as one of the largest pool builders in the country with more than 60,000 pools built, we set the standard as the industry leader. In fact, 98% of all our projects are finished on time and within budget!

2. Will a pool increase the value of my home?
Yes. Most studies show that a pool will increase the value of your home anywhere between 7% and 15%, depending on where your house is located. It will also continue to increase in value throughout the years, just like you home.

3. What about warranties? Is my investment well-protected?
Warranties are very important. At California Pools, we provide you with the strongest guarantee in the swimming pool industry. We are confident in the product we build and we offer a warranty that backs it up. You should always ask for and compare the warranties when requesting estimates from builders. You should also remember that a warranty is only as good as the company that issues it. Dozens of pool builders go out of business each year. And if they’re gone, so is your warranty.

California Pools has been building pools for more than 55 years. In fact, some of the very first pools we built in 1952 are still in great shape and get regular use. We build our pools to last, and we’ll always be here to stand by our swimming pools in the future. Anyone can offer a "lifetime warranty," but if they aren’t in business for the duration of your pool’s life, then you haven’t got much of a warranty.

4. I’ve heard that having a swimming pool can be a lot of work. How much work is involved in owning and caring for a swimming pool?
In the past, pool maintenance was more of a chore. But with today’s technology and conveniences, owning a swimming pool is easier than owning a car! Pool chemical testing and maintenance, cleaning, and preprogrammed filtration and heating can all be automated. Automatic pool cleaners and various sanitizing devices also make your pool simple to maintain. Your only concern will be finding more time to enjoy your pool or spa! Be sure to ask your California Pools representative about the exclusive Califronia Clean System and the "California Purifyer."

5. I sometimes see advertisements promising pools at very low prices. Should I consider this option?
It is actually possible to build a pool at a low price. But you should be aware that to build a low cost pool, equipment, structural elements, craftsmanship, and design are all compromised. Besides ending up with a pool that doesn’t fit your property because of improper design, using poor quality construction materials can also put you and your family at risk. The old adage is still true: You get what you pay for.

At California Pools, we know that the cost difference between a great job and a poor job doesn’t have to be significant. Your California Pool professional will work with you to determine a budget that meets your needs. We can custom design your pool to fit your financial parameters, and we’ll also help you secure the appropriate financing. The end result is a beautiful and dependable custom pool that is affordable and within your budget.

6. Why do cost estimates vary so much when the pools seem to be the same?
The price of a pool is determined by much more than just the size and shape of that pool. Unfortunately, many contractors don’t include important factors that affect cost in the actual estimate they give you. This also means that you can get hit with hidden charges after construction has begun. Some important things to consider are:

Quality of Materials

Craftsmanship

Design Expertise

Underground Strength and Durability

Customer Service

Time Required for Construction

Warranties

California Pools’ estimates always include the highest quality materials available, superior craftsmanship, expert design, and unparalleled customer service. You also get the knowledge and expertise of more than 55 years of custom pool building experience. And we never submit a low introductory bid with the intent of making expensive changes later.

7. What factors affect the cost of my swimming pool?
Surprisingly, construction costs for the pool structure itself do not vary greatly from pool to pool. Prices can be affected slightly by ease of access onto your property, demolition requirements prior to construction, and local permit costs. The size and design of the pool affect the cost too, but not as much as you might think.

Much of the variation in price is based on what is called "hardscape." Hardscape is what is placed around your pool to enhance its design. The size and materials used in your deck, patios, waterfalls, gazebos, planter walls, and other features can be simple or sensational. As the customer, you have the greatest influence on your total budget as you control the design of your pool’s hardscape.

8. Is financing readily available for this type of project?
Yes. And it’s probably easier than you think. Tens of thousands of Californians have discovered they can give their families a beautiful new pool by merely taking the equity in their home and converting it to cash. It’s easy, inexpensive, and very tax wise!

It’s Easy. Financing is approved over the phone and documents are brought to you in your home.

It’s Inexpensive. Because of our sheer volume (we’ve built more than 60,000 pools!), we attract the very best and most trusted lenders in the industry.

It’s Tax Wise. Did you know that every dollar of interest you pay can be taken as a direct deduction from your taxable income?

You can also use your swimming pool financing to generate additional funds for other home improvement projects or to pay off other high interest, non-deductible credit cards. This often results in savings that literally pay for the home improvement.

For more information or a downloadable application, visit California Equity and Loan

9. Should I consider building my own pool as a homeowner?
Never! And you can bet that equipment suppliers and other contractors will charge you more than the actual value of the materials and work. Even the experts encounter incredible challenges during pool construction. Years of experience, knowledge, and specific training lead to wise and innovative solutions that produce our superior quality finished products. At California Pools, we can offer you enormous buying power, efficient construction, and we also coordinate all of the work so that you experience no hassles and no headaches. Plus, everything is guaranteed. For more information, check out www.poolbuyerguide.com.

10. How should I decide on the design of my pool?
Each property has unique features that should be considered when your pool is being designed. So does your family! At your request, a design expert from California Pools will meet with you at your home to discuss your pool needs and desires. He or she will ask you how you intend to use your pool. Is exercise important? How about family use? What about location? Where will the pool look best when viewed from your home? Our design expert may take photographs, video, or sketches of your yard. Then they’ll prepare a custom design at no charge…a design that fits your needs AND your budget! California Pools has received more national design awards than any other swimming pool contractor in the world.

11. I have a small and difficult yard to work with. Can I still have a pool?
Expert builders can construct quality pools in yards of all shapes and sizes. Our expert design and engineering team can work with the most challenging properties. You’ll be surprised by our innovative solutions that can turn your dreams into a beautiful backyard resort. Before you give up on your impossibly small yard or hillside location, call us for design advice. It’s free!

12. Are there any additional options available to add to my pool?
Technology is changing at an unprecedented rate, and swimming pools are no exception. Innovative water treatment options, fiber-optic lighting, spa products, remote controls, automatic cleaning systems, and many other options are now available to make your pool easier to maintain and more enjoyable than ever. Tell us what you would like, and we can show you how to do it.

13. Do pools contribute to the drought?
Water agency studies have proven that residential swimming pools require considerably less water to maintain than the landscaping they replace. And water in your swimming pool stays right there whenever needed in an emergency.

10 Myths of Pool Ownership

Here are the top ten myths – and some helpful tips – about owning and maintaining a swimming pool.

1. "I can’t afford a pool."
Owning a pool is probably a lot easier than you think. There are many reasonably-priced options for putting a pool in your backyard. The type of pool, materials, accessories, and landscaping you choose will influence the cost of the project. You should also remember that your pool will help reduce other expenses, such as the cost of vacations away from home, membership dues to community pools and other recreational activities.

2. "My yard will be ruined for a year and workmen will be around all the time."
An accurate understanding of the building process will help you develop realistic expectations for the completion of your pool. Many pools are completed in just a few months. But obviously, unforeseen factors such as the weather or permit delays can affect the building process. A good builder will communicate any changes in the project schedule to you as soon as possible.

3. "It takes too much time and effort to maintain a pool."
You can always hire a professional to do the job, but with today’s cost-effective technology, you can get the same great results in very little time. In fact, maintaining a pool is easier than maintaining your car or your lawn!

4. "My electric bill will significantly go up if I own a pool."
Utility bills vary depending on where you live and who your provider is, but average estimates show that utility bills only increase between $30 and $50 each month. But that’s nothing when compared to the money you’d otherwise spend on entertainment, vacations, and trips to the community pool, including the expense of gasoline, food, and concessions.

5. "I’m afraid of the risk of accidents and drowning occurring at my pool."
While attentive adult supervision is the best way to maintain a safe pool, fences, pool covers, gates and pool alarms offer additional layers of protection to enhance safety. Some experts believe that having a pool actually saves untold lives because children who learn to swim at a very early age are less likely to drown in an emergency situation later in life.

6. "I am worried about the increased insurance and liability that come with owning a pool."
Homeowners should always check with their current insurance brokers and shop around for the best coverage available. You should also contract with a reputable builder, carefully read safety materials, closely follow safety equipment instructions, and ensure that there is adult supervision of the pool at all times.

7. "Pools require constant repair."
You should research a builder’s work and ask questions about the longevity of the pool types they are considering. Proper cleaning and maintenance prevent the need for unscheduled refurbishing, and some companies may even offer a lifetime guarantee for pools they install.

8. "I’m afraid of getting taken by a dishonest pool builder."
Like with any building project, you should always check a builder’s professional credentials, ask for references and view samples of complete work.

9. "A pool is a big investment and I’m afraid that financing will be really difficult."
Homeowners can finance a pool with a long-term mortgage. Additionally, pool builders who offer in-store financing have industry experience and can explain financing options, loan terms and current interest rates to help you find a manageable monthly payment plan.

10. "I’ve heard that pools detract from the appeal of a home in the real estate market instead of adding to it."
Not true. Banks and other financial lenders often look favorably upon swimming pool financing, considering it a "home improvement" that will increase both the current and resale value of the home.

10 Great Reasons To Have A Pool

1. Encourage Family Time
When you build a pool, you’re actually creating a fun and relaxing space for your children and family to spend time together without ever leaving the backyard! You’ll make lasting memories as you teach your kids to swim, play with them in the pool, and bar-b-que by the water.

2. Create an Outdoor Resort at Home
A well-designed swimming pool isn’t just a bunch of water. It can turn your backyard into an elegant outdoor oasis. With waterfalls, vanishing edges and other unique amenities, a pool can serve as a relaxing and inviting centerpiece right in your own backyard.

3. Throw a Party
When warm afternoons and cool summer evenings roll around, a pool is a great way to entertain. Invite your friends and neighbors over for a poolside bar-b-que or a dip in the water.

4. Stay Healthy and Lose Weight
Instead of driving to the gym, you can spend time exercising in your own pool. Research shows that swimming provides a better total body workout with a low risk of injury. It also helps you to lose weight faster.

5. Unwind and Relax
When you get home from a long day at work or need to escape the busyness of life, take a quick dip in your pool to unwind. Spending time in the water helps your body relax and get rid of stress. You’ll also sleep better than you ever have before.

6. Increase the Value of Your Home
Recent studies show that owning a pool increases the value of your home by as much as 15%. It also makes your property more attractive to prospective homebuyers. If it comes time to move, owning a pool may be the difference between selling your home quickly or keeping it on the market.

7. Stay Cool
Instead of hiding out indoors by the air-conditioning, you can beat the summer heat by lounging in the cool waters of your own pool.

8. Keep an Eye on Your Kids
With a swimming pool in your backyard, you can give your kids and their friends a place to play that is both convenient and safe. You can also rest easy knowing that your children are close by.

9. Save Some Money
A pool is easier to finance and maintain than most people think. And in the long run, pools are less expensive than big family vacations and other entertainment options – and they last longer.

10. Long Lasting Fun
Building a pool is a great investment that will reap rewards for a lifetime. A vacation, a movie, or a visit to a theme park will all come to an end, but a pool will be enjoyed by your friends and family for years to come.
